NYC Coffee Crawl

The city that never sleeps.
At the end of August last year I spent 5 nights in NYC. My wife and I were there for a family wedding and I got a chance to spend a couple of sunny afternoons doing a coffee crawl.
First stop Cafe Grumpy’s Chelsea location. Gotta love their sign!

My first real coffee in NYC and it was great! I ordered a “Gibraltor” named for the glass that it was put in. Think doppio macchiato on the bigger side. Velvety milk done at just the right temperature. Great service and a barista who loves what she does – so much so that she has made a permanent mark.
Next stop Ninth Street Espresso’s Chelsea Markets location. What an incredible place Chelsea Market is. Think Granville Market on steriods – but no fresh fruit – just great little places to eat quickly. You had to walk inside a fair way to get to Ninth Street Espresso. Very nice looking bar – and it was just that – a bar. More great drinks. Had an espresso and a “cortado” here – again in the same Gibraltar glass.
Ryan made an exceptional drink.
That was all I had time for on day one.
Day two.
Next stop Abraco Cute little cafe.
Day three.
Gimme Coffee – don’t let the name fool you – this is one great operation! In SOHO on Mott Street, I could live here (and I really really mean that).
Check out this very cool wall bar!
This was supposed to be my last stop – until the baristas told me about another place I had to check out. Next stop Brooklyn!
El Beit – 158 Bedford Avenue, Brooklyn. Doesn’t that already sound like a cool address!
They dont have a website yet (apparently some of the best coffee bars don’t have sites yet).
Great neighborhood vibe – WIFI and one of the best Gibraltors on my trip.
Can I get that to go?
That’s all for this trip – can’t wait to get back to New York and do some more!
Twalk at ya.

Tarry,
Fantastic post. The elegant combination of words and pictures took me to NY without ever leaving the comfort of my chair. However, I remain concerned with the glowing commentary on the coffee you tasted there. Knowing that you have a blind affection for the city, I’m worried that “everything” tastes better in NY to a guy like you. Even the coffee in those quintessentially NY blue cups with the Greek motif might merit critical acclaim.
So how good was it really? A gibraltar in NY is better than, equal too, or less than a gibraltar at say… Crema?
I mean when it comes to coffee we’re still the sharp end of the spear out here on the West Coast right? Right?!?!
Aaron,
Love is blind – and I do love NYC, so maybe I don’t know (but maybe I do) – but even if I did, my response is the same as a famous local coffee guru ….”I don’t kiss and tell”….
